Snape’s unrequited love for lily isn’t his “tragic backstory” it’s just reinforcing the theme of the entire series that the power of love conquers everything. It’s not trying to make you feel bad for snape it’s telling you the impact that snape’s love had on the entire storyline, and Voldemort’s demise. It’s not supposed to be “tragic” that he “didn’t get the girl” it’s supposed to be illuminating that everything he did in the entire series he did bc of love.
